one flew over the cuckoo’s nest…..

so I have a little catching up to do. yes. the ticket is for the march 27 showing of portland center stage’s production of one flew over the cuckoo’s nest and today’s date is april 15. I have been over my head in activities lately so everything is a little delayed. no matter. here it is in its fine form proof that I am a cultured gal after all. a big pat on the back. it all started with my uber cool book club, aptly titled “totally awesome book club” when we decided to read ken kesey’s classic one flew over the cuckoo’s nest to coincide with the pcs production that was coming into town. we had all agreed that it would be fun to read the book and then compare it to the play. no one really prepared us for the intensity that would be cuckoo’s nest. I had to read my copy whilst in illinois dealing with a personal tragedy so it resonated with such intensity that I had to put it down several times.
it’s a great read and all the more so if you are in portland where the novel takes place. I was lucky to score a 1962 edition of it at powell’s. the play was fun though it lacked the intensity and buildup that the novel created, some things got lost in translation. which is unfortunate as it is what gave the novel its strength. we had fun and it was great to see the characters played out by such a great cast. the set design was great and the whole show was well done, but our favourite part? it didn’t even happen on stage. during intermission we got shushed by a woman sitting in the row in front of us. a few of us were chatting and catching up when it was alright to talk and we weren’t even loud but obviously she felt we were. she turned around, put her finger up to her lips and shushed us like a bunch of five year olds. she shushed us. we’re still laughing about it.
oh one more thing, the poster for cuckoo’s nest. love it. original artwork by santiego uceda. mind blowingly awesome. I might have to get that framed for my place cuz you know it can be a psych ward here sometimes…….
